2025 Conference update

Announcing our 2025 conference back in May we signalled the theme would be climate and the economy. The current economy is failing to deliver the necessities for a good life. Among these necessities are good water, kai, energy, and community. We have a lot of ground to cover in two days, so we will probably focus on kai and energy, with the themes of economy and community running throughout.

Our intention is to help find pathways to redesign our food and energy systems in ways that help to heal the climate and help us be more food and energy secure. There are increasing signs that our current systems are unsustainable.

We intend to shape up the programme in the next few months and will announce it as soon as possible.

Alongside conference planning, Climate Action Tai Tokerau is developing a food sovereignty project with the NRC’s Climate staff, Dr Geoff Kira and others. This project will enable us to bring several pathways to help the transition from the current industrial food system to a regenerative food system. The workshops will support the co-design of these pathways, including forming kai communities.

Some exciting opportunties have emerged and we hope to announce a keynote speaker for day two soon.

The Wellbeing Economy Alliance is a global collaboration of organisations, alliances, movements and individuals working to transform the economic system. Gareth Hughes is the Director of the Wellbeing Economy Alliance Aotearoa Hub.

Here are two regenerative economists to stimulate your thinking.

John Fullerton’s Regenerative Capitalism is free online. His eight principles of regenerative vitality embed principles learnt from the world of nature.

Kate Raworth is the author of Doughnut Economics. Her book is summarised on this website with plenty of video. Scroll down on this page for a podcast of John and Kate discussing regenerative economics (season 1 episode 4).

If you have ideas for workshops that fit with kaupapa outlined above, please get in touch. We are assembling a panel to finalise the programme so we get a good fit with the outcomes we are hoping for.

  1. I would like to see encouragement for everyone to grow some of their own food. Even in an apartment you can grow microgreens ! Citrus trees in tubs on balconies ! And every garden should be producing at least salad stuff.

  2. Hi Peter, Have you seen the documentary The Grab? About how foreign countries are buying up farmland and water rights all over the world. It might be something to screen during the conference, or maybe a movie night leading up to it. I’ve only seen the trailer but the content looks terrifying. The film was shown at a film festival in Auckland last July but I don’t know if anyone has shown it around here. Casey Wyeth
