Kai sovereignty update, Summer 2026

The Kai Sovereignty project funded by the NRC’s Climate Communities Resilience Fund continues into 2026. You can read our report Our Food Web here.

We are refining our strategy through action to promote local, regenerative food systems. This way, the more we do, the more we learn, and more people’s insights help us to ground the strategy.

We have 12 workstreams with people who are involved in regenerative food systems helping out. Some examples follow.

There is a Regenerative Kiwifruit Field Day at Maungatapere on 24 February at Maungatapere. The topics covered are also relevant for other orchard crops. Read more here.

Telling stories and highlighting the good things happening is also important. Here is a recent video we published about food initiatives.

The Education and Health workstream is active and exploring ways to accelerate the transition to regenerative food. The contrast between industrial food and regenerative food is illustrated by those schools receiving the industrial slop from Auckland and schools working with their local communities to provide lunches. (Read more here). There is also a group looking into ways to initiate Food is Medicine projects.
